John Lewis, civil rights leader and congressman, died on July 17. He will be buried today. I don’t know whether he knew or cared much for the Middle Ages. No matter. He knew his history, including how past wrongs breed injustice in the present. Today, posthumously, he offered a reminder and an antidote: Let freedom ring.
